2 DAYS?? Where does time go? No excuses here...

So, where did I leave off?

Hubby's intention on this trip was to follow in the footsteps of Daniel Boone. I think he accomplished at least some of what he wanted to do:
Fort Boonesborough, Boone Station, Boone Tavern, and EKU where we followed tradition and...

Rubbed the left toe of Daniel Boone's statue for good luck!



We traveled south to the small town of Berea. The Folk Arts & Crafts Capital of KY!
Where we found 2 favorite shops~Michelle Weston's Glass Studio and Weaver's Bottom!





This is the "woven" column outside the studio...pretty huh?

Of course, I spent quite a bit of time chatting with Neil Colmer, owner of Weaver's Bottom, what an interesting man. He was setting up a loom to make a copy of an "Overshot Coverlet"! As explained to me, this customer had come to him with this picture...which he showed to me, having a history myself of reproducing historical clothing...and guessing at what certain parts of the dress or outfit's design was I was astounded at this photo. The baby was sitting on the coverlet, the only portions of the blanket really visible were the corners and it was black & white so he was also guessing at the colors according to the date of the photo. AMAZING!


Before we left he sat at one of his many looms and let me take this picture of him. (He is not working on the coverlet I was telling you about.)
Have I told you I want to learn to weave?! I need 3 or 4 clones of myself...

Sorry no pics from the glass studio, it was really hard to get a good shot of her. She was making these beautiful starfish...and some of the things that she had made for sale were AMAZING! I love to watch glass making, but it's too darn hot for me to want as a hobby.

no post today...went to the eye doctor...had my eyes dilated (finally able to read a little of what I'm typing)...but still feelin' funky! Good news is no new prescription...yet, but I know next year will probably be different. Oh~~but I did learn about bifocal contact lenses...oh yeah!!

An Author...Me??

(mini rant ahead)
I need to write a book...the subject? Either "Camping Etiquette" or "Parenting" I'm not sure which.
While I've been camping since I was a child but today there are many people who are new to the hobby, if that's what you call it.
The campground was packed...I'm mean to the gills and beyond (the overflow was side by side) for the Memorial weekend, which we fully expected. The campsites are very spacious with lots of privacy. We were situated so that our site was divided by a creek (too overgrown with brush and poison oak to see) on one side and a gravel road on the other.
What we didn't expect was the disrespect of the kids...this is not just in the camping world, just ask any librarian!
I've always known this because I was "taught" that you don't walk through someones campsite...duh? In my mind, and maybe I'm the only one who thinks this way, when you reserve a campsite that's your "home" for as long as you are paid up to stay there. Would you just walk into someones home? I wouldn't! We had a regular parade of kids cutting through our campsite (and not down the gravel road just few yards away)...even while we were eating our dinner! Finally I broke bad (yeah~right) and told the kids it wasn't polite to walk through someones campsite...at first they looked at me like I had something wrong with me, but when they "forgot" and started to do it again all I had to do was give that "MOM LOOK" that my kids knew all too well. Then Sunday came and they were all gone. We had the place to ourselves...I bet there weren't even 5 campers/tents in the whole place....ahhhh! Which proves...patience is a virtue.
You tell me which type of book I should write?! I do feel that in society today "respect" is lacking EVERYWHERE! I don't just mean where kids are concerned...adults are just as guilty! Most recently, and this is all things I've heard and read about--I wasn't there, was at MDS&W. I still live by the "Golden Rule", when I get angry enough to feel like lashing out...I think back to what I was taught~~"Do Unto Others..." Is this such a foreign concept today?
(okay...so maybe it wasn't such a "mini rant")

Now...onto the purpose of this post!

As you know we spent the weekend re-enacting at the fort...and becoming front page news! Yeah, I had to say that again...
It wasn't too hot...it wasn't too cool...it was perfect!
I spent most of my time here~~




...chatting with the spinner & weaver...I only took my Kromski Sonata, which will not pass 18th century inspection!! So I would spin at the camper.

The fort is so interesting, it's built just as it was back in 1775...each log cabin contains a "craft" (lively hood) depicted that would have been necessary. Here's a sampling:


I'll save you all the pics from my other fascination while camping...lets just say the Cicada's (some people call them locust) are emerging and becoming adults. We would wake up in the morning to find the "shells" everywhere! One morning they decided my Crocs looked like a good place to "hatch". By the time we left they were beginning to sing to us. I remember when Julia was a baby we were camping and the boys were having a blast catching them. They kept this bucket that literally hummed!

For Your Amusement...

(disclaimer--this is for amusement...please don't take offense. I mean NO HARM...just laugh!)

A few things I learned while in Kentucky:

The Mullet, made famous by this Kentuckian, is alive and well! I saw more than I've seen in quite some time...hey, my ex STILL wears his, thankfully I don't have to see him...never...ever!

Apparently the US ends at the eastern border of West Virginia! People would ask where we were from...our response was "SW Virginia" they'd say...."Near Beckley (WV)?"...every time!

Jogging and/or exercise gets you attention...seriously I felt like Forrest Gump while on my daily run~~I saw some of the most puzzled looks on their faces. I just wanted to say..."I just felt like run-nning!" ...the Yoga on the other had I figured I'd get some strange looks.

The grass is green just like ours...we both kept looking for the "bluegrass" but were told that at the right time of the morning...when it's in bloom and the fog is just right you can see it!

Seriously...Kentucky is a BEAUTIFUL state! We had so much fun on our adventures, even if gas prices basically stopped us in our tracks with our plans. We were going to a Cincinnati Reds game (and further into the state of OH) but it had already cost us $300 to even get to Fort Boonesborough. It helped that Hubby sold 5 (yes FIVE) flutes while we were there. He was also able to trace the footsteps of Daniel Boone at many of the locations within 30 mile radius of our camp.

I'm going to have to spread this post out over several days (this post has taken me nearly 4 hours to put together)...there's just so much to share!

So, we start in Huntington, WV where we did stop at the Memorial for the Marshall plane crash and paid our respects, something I've always wanted to do. Next I want to attend the ceremony at the fountain in November. I remember when the tragedy happened and LOVE the movie!

Next was time for lunch...this was FUN! I'm a huge fan of Foodnetwork, which often times causes problems for me with Weight Watchers, one of my favorite shows is Diners, Drive-in's & Dives with Guy Fieri. A couple of weeks before leaving I saw an episode that featured THIS restaurant...it was on our way... (channeling Forrest...)..."so we went"! Now, IF I had not seen this episode


I seriously doubt I would have stopped at a place that looked like this...




But it was SO much fun...and there was SO MUCH to see!! The owner, Sonny greeted us (SUPER NICE GUY) and promptly informed us that "His Weenie Wife" (Sharie) was in town but would be back shortly...she was just as nice as her hubby!
There was graffiti everywhere...in fact it was encouraged. We signed our names too!!

...there was a test which we failed! The door is hinged on the same side as the doorknob. Which, for "out-of-towners like ourselves, we walk around looking for the "correct" entrance...duh! The menu is enormous so you might as well sit down and study for a while! When you leave a tip in the jar, they sing to you! Everything is made while you wait (including their handmade onion rings-yummy good) and if the lunch crowd is there (which we were just between, as we were leaving the next shift filled the parking lot) you have plenty to look at and read on the walls!

To order dessert you go to the next building appropriately called--

"The Sugar Shack"


And if nature called while you were there...

See the names on the doors? That's the names of the owners!!

The food was terrific...I'll be going back, and I suggest if you are in the area...stop in! Try the 5 or 10 pound burger!!

Finally...once we arrived at our camp and were all set up we enjoyed a Kentucky favorite:

I have found a new pattern for my purple CotLin~~check out this link SEE WHAT YOU THINK! Personally, I'm lovin' it!! I'm on my second pattern repeat (the picture only shows 1 repeat)...easy to remember, fun to knit.

I've got a new baby sweater to knit, my friend Sherry is going to be a Grandma again. Her second grandson is due in October.
Oh...I could keep naming all the projects I'm working on but my Ravelry queue is way out of hand!
I am taking my wheel and fiber for spinning too...Like Carole said in her post today, "only 10 minutes a day makes a difference" so I'm going to spin a little each day, though I'm sure it'll be more than just 10 minutes.

Sedalia is happening this weekend, I won't be there but I'll be thinking about all you "Fiber Hogs"...and wishing I was among you!! Oh, I'm in no need of any fiber or yarn...but it's the obsession to have it all and be around others who share the same desires. Believe me, I'm ready for anything....power outage, flood...

In my last post I showed you a picture of "sweet" Ace...I happened to remember this old picture that's weathered the test of time and being stuck to the refrigerator for almost 16 years. Yes, it's pretty nasty...who knows what's been splattered on it. I need to find the negative...

This is a SWEET Ace! Same window...same kitty! I'm not sure if y'all know but I've raised him since he was about 3 days old (his little brother & sister didn't make it). I bottle fed him and kept him warm by putting him in my shirt and fed him every 3 hours--even through the night. He would sit on my lap as I sat at the sewing machine, which I believe he always thought the whirr of the sewing machine was me purring. Now anytime I'm sewing he, though he's more than a lap full now, still jumps up in my lap and purrs right back at me. I'm being very facetious about him being "sweet", he is at times but has grown into such a grouchy old man. I guess he's earned it! At the moment he's still mad at me that I've taken his pillow away from him. His back still bothers him at times so who does he think he is? "Mr. LoveMachine"??

...after ripping back 3 times, when the 4th time presented itself I decided I REALLY didn't LOVE this pattern enough to continue to re-knit it every time I got to this point. The decreases sure didn't match up to the way the pattern was reading. Oh well...

Sometimes It Just Happens....

Oops...I did it again! It happened even when I told myself--NO...it sneaks up on you and jumps in your arms! I was always the one bringing home stray animals, who needed a good home where it would be loved and petted. I guess I'm still doing it today, only with fiber/fabric/yarn!

This unassuming Victorian era home has a very nice surprise inside...




The yarn from left to right is--Mirasol Project Peru Sam'pa (please click the links and read the story of this yarn...I HAD to have it), then some Tofutsies (on sale) and Cascade Heritage sock yarn (no real reason to buy it other than I just wanted it). Take note of the Noni Medallion Travel Bag pattern (ravelry link)--Aunt Pam is making this and it's fabulous (she twisted my arm by bringing her gorgeous bag to our last Knit Night)

Joe & Angel are two of the NICEST people I've met recently, and SO helpful about info in town. Our time was limited but we did take some of their advice. First stop was 234 Gallery, which by the way is a work of art in itself...the inlay floors are AMAZING, after chatting with the owner Hubby's flutes will be featured in her gallery next month! We walked around Trinty Church, the Tiffany stained glass windows are breathtaking...needing refreshment we then too another piece of advice given by finding The Split Banana---mmmmmm-mmmmmmmmmm good! Their sorbets, gelatos and ice creams are made in house! AND...they let you taste as many as you want to...and I DID!
We continued to walk downtown for a while until we were both ready to get back to the camp for a rest. We WILL be going back...as often as possible!

Green I Tell Ya....Green!

...I'm so envious of all the posts I've been reading about MDS&W!
Next year, I'm going!
It's not so much that I NEED anything....I just missed out on a Fiber Lover's version of WOODSTOCK!! (hereafter known as WOOLSTOCK)...And they all kept their clothes on~~well, except for the sheep!
I missed meeting everybody!! (sniff-sniff)

I seriously don't didn't need any fiber and/or yarn but I did it anyway, just so I'd have something to post about after the festivities!

Thursday night's KnitNight David Simpson surprised us with a visit and his new line of sock yarn! So...(as Forrest would say) I bought some....again!

...and thanks to Ravelry and their "AD's" I found some more fiber to try...the colors grabbed me. Both are Merino/Silk blends.
At this point...I'm out of room for any more goodies in my fiber room...DD is going to have to give hers up!!

One more thing before I go, I want to apologize to the "anonymous commenter" from THIS post. I didn't mean to step on any toes. I just remember when things were simpler, and there were NO houses on SML. Listen, I even complain about my home town growing...traffic is horrible anymore. Maybe I'm just getting to the age point I need to move out in the country away from all the noise and commotion. Please accept my apology...

I've been reading up on the Ravings of MDS&W...apparently I MISSED IT totally!! I am enjoying reading ALL the reviews! I can't wait to see what the gals in our group came back with....Maybe next year Chase will skip a birthday?!



I promised knitting content and I'm delivering! I started another summer top, though this time I'm not as excited as I was about the last one. I don't know if it's the design or the yarn...or maybe the design isn't right for the yarn. Then again it could be my allergy induced state that's preventing my enjoyment.

Celebrations and Such...

As I sit here....

...writing this post, I'm thinking about the last 25 years. Tomorrow is my baby boy's birthday! (Hey, the oldest will be 27 next month!) I can remember what I was feeling on this day 25 years ago, I was to be induced the next morning...the pain and joy of seeing your baby's face for the first time.




I have all sorts of pictures of him but this one (yes, I've posted it before) is my favorite...
The joy he has brought to me, even though we have had some very difficult times (you know...those teenage years). I'm so proud of the man he has become and the future he has before him. We have a very special bond...he's been there for me when times were as bad as I thought they could ever get, and I'll ALWAYS be there when he needs his Mom!

Last night we had the family celebration dinner at none other than The Homeplace....Mmmmmmm-mmmmm good! The crowd was HUGE as usual, and we had quite a considerable wait...but this is the only place I'll wait for an hour and a half on a table! When friends and family come to town THIS is where we take them to eat! Wanna come visit me??

There may be those who are tired of seeing my flower pictures, but you know what (queue Lesley Gore) "It's my blog and I'll post what I want to!"

I look at the colors as the emerge and picture them in fiber!

The ants are working hard...

My old fashion climbing rose has opened...I can't wait to show the yellow climber, last years Easter freeze killed every but. This year looks to be a grand one, I hope I'm not disappointed.

#5 on my "Bud List" has opened, but something has been chewing on my Clematis!

My yellow flag lily (pond plant) has a bazillion blooms to open, but only one or two a day...so they should last for a while!

And my Granny's columbine (single variety)...





We've even had a regular visit from a pair of Goldfinches!

I promise to have knitting content soon! I'm going to close for now because my spinning wheel wants to come outside to play!

Playing Catch-up...

Wow...has it really been almost a week since my last post?

I just realized I didn't even post about our camping trip almost 2 weeks ago. Though it stormed on that Saturday night we still had a wonderful time...well, except for waking up on that Saturday morning...in a stupor...without caffeine...to look out across from our campsite to see this~~



What do you see?? I literally had to put on my glasses only to find it necessary to ask Hubby if he was seeing what I was seeing! BigFoot lives at Claytor Lake State Park!

We did have the opportunity for a beautiful sunrise...


I must say I love this place, it's nice and peaceful...unlike Smith Mountain Lake, which has become "The Vacation Spot" for many. Personally I prefer a little less noise. I remember as a kid going and not seeing but a few fishing boats all day (I know I'm old). Now there are so many pleasure boats, speed boats and jet skis you really can't enjoy a ride on the lake without being beat-up by the wakes. There was a couple killed a few years ago by a drunk boater, lots of issues with boating and alcohol during the summer. Put me by a babbling stream with a fishing pole and/or my knitting and the birds singing...I'm happy!




I did get Hubby's socks finished, he's very pleased.













Thanks for all the comments & guesses on my last post...I do love my garden especially this time of year as I anticipate all the new flowers, so you can expect to see plenty more of my pretty garden faces as they emerge!

Maryland Sheep & Wool happening this weekend...but I'm not going....again! The timing is so bad for me, from what I hear about the crowds...I'm not so sure I want to battle for my purchases. I'd LOVE to meet all my blogging buddies there, but like I said the timing is bad. It just so happens that the first weekend of May is very special...this year we celebrate 25 years~~My Baby Boy...DS#2 turns 25. So hard to believe! Not to mention I'm not lacking in fiber of any sort, so it's best I stay away from the temptation. I hope all you that ARE going will fondle some fiber...kiss a sheep and/or alpaca and say hello to my fellow bloggers for me! I'll miss you all...

Earth Day '08

I'm still playing around with my "old" film camera. "Trick" photography has always fascinated me...playing with the shutter speeds, various lens angles and film is FUN!

How do you think I achieved the effects in this photo? No...I haven't altered it in any way, well, except for resizing it for uploading.

What are you doing for Earth Day today?

My thoughts of what do to started over the weekend. While we were camping I started picking up after the "pigs" people who use the trails & fish along the shore line of the lake...yes, I picked up some thoughtless idiot's trash (I know I shouldn't call people names but come on some deserve it). I even did so yesterday after my walk at our local park. I REALLY don't understand these people! A couple of places where I picked up trash it was about 20 feet from a trash can.
When you hear about the possibility of State Parks closings (please give Birdsong any support you can)...you'd think people would do more to take care of what we have! It costs the State money to pay for maintenance and clean up...I'd love to catch someone leaving their trash. They would hear my full rant...and...I know what my name would be! It would start with a "B"!!

.....and I started (about a month ago) using my own tote bags at the grocery store!

It creates some really dramatic effects with the fresh shoots of greenery, it glows. Awesome huh?

Thanks for all your kind thoughts about my 4-legged nephew, Hank. He's going to be missed so much by all of us. It's just a waiting game now...

Saying Goodbye...

...is such a hard thing to do.

This is my 13 year old nephew, Hank, though the picture was taken some time back he's aged a great deal since. Bad news came Friday...we must tell him goodbye.

DS #2, Chase, is a HUGE Red Sox fan...and has recently taken up golf. He went out and bought a new set of clubs with all the BoSox accessories he could find with the exception of one thing. I noticed he had the generic golf club covers, so what does a Knittin' Mom do? She designs and knits him some golf club covers! One glitch I had was the fact that today's golf clubs aren't like the golf clubs of old. Thankfully the #5 club is the same size of the "clubs of yesterday", so I had to re size for the last 2 covers in order to fit these "MONSTER" size clubs. I'm not a big golfer, though I do enjoy smacking the ball around...but these new LARGER clubs do make me wonder. Are they just so that the "guys" can pat each other on the back and say "Mine's bigger than yours"!

I'm happy to announce that I HAVE cast on my first pair of socks of 2008 (I don't include golf club covers as socks...or could I?).


They are for Hubby...he didn't want a real tight fitting socks, so I searched and searched for a pattern that wasn't "too lacy" or feminine. This is from Charlene Schurch ,of course, Sensational Knitted Socks 5-stitch pattern Little Shell Rib. I'm loving knitting it...he loves the feel and the look...every one's happy!

The weather here has been crazy...but, of course, it's Spring time...at least it was. The last few nights we've had freeze warnings, so my fear was that my beautiful flowers would suffer. I put them to bed everything...yes, blankets and everything...but I couldn't possibly save my lilacs so I cut this bouquet.


Yes, I AM an allergy sufferer...but I LOVE my lilacs! The tulips really opened up beautifully after I took the picture, I should have waited a little while.

We have a big weekend planned..."The First Camping Trip Of The Season"!!! I can't wait!!!!! Spinning & Knitting is already packed!

In Threes...

I'm so sorry to keep you all hanging on...after the happenings of last week I sort of regressed and forgot to post. Really all I wanted to do was go to sleep and wake up again!

So where was I? Oh...last Monday I received a phone call from my Mom, you know one of those where you KNOW something is wrong. They were rushing my brother...my only--younger--baby brother to the hospital with chest pains. Panic and fear hit me immediately. I made a few phone calls and off the the hospital I went. After lots of tests they determined there was no heart damage, well except for a little enlargement of his heart from...high blood pressure. My brother has high blood pressure and has had it for quite some time now. It's really hard to say that I'm happy that's all it is...but I am. Now he has TWO mothers calling him daily to make sure he's taken his meds!!!

Oh...but that's not all that happened!

Remember how everything happens in 3's?!

Well, on Tuesday afternoon DD was going to her class at the Community College when this girl backed into her. Smack dab in the middle of her passenger door! And had the nerve to say it was DD's fault!! Excuse me...
Now we are jumping through hoops to get the "driver-at-fault's" insurance to cover the damage!

I'm counting Mr Ace's "injury" the week before as one of them!! He's much better and in fact "found" his pillow late one night, I'm putting it in the closet. If he can open that door he can have it! I remind him all the time that until he grows thumbs there are just limits to what he can do!

We did have a wonderful weekend...Milo was here. Sorry no pics, we were just so busy playing that I didn't even pick up the camera. This coming weekend is going to be even better...we are going on our first camping trip of the season. Don't you think we're in need of one?

I promise I'll have some knitting content...I have been knitting~~how else do I keep my sanity and MY blood pressure down? Of course I offered to teach my brother to knit...nothing doing!

Sucker Punched...

Have you ever had one of THOSE weeks? This is only Tuesday...what else can possibly go wrong? I'll fill you in later.

I know this is a knitting blog...and I do have some progress to report, I just don't have the energy to go there right now~~sorry.

But I must ask you to read THIS...some people make me SICK TO MY STOMACH! Personally, they should have the same thing done to them...that is if they ever catch them.

Sorry I'm in such a "P"-poor mood...

Feelin' Better!

Hi Everybody!! Ace here...

I'm feeling much better, thanks for all the kind thoughts sent my way. This past week was a very confusing one for me.








All I know is...last Sunday night I was spending a little time with my "pillow"....the next minute I was hurting really bad.
Mom tried everything to help me. She massaged my back but that hurt...she gave me little orange pills, but I still hurt...and she cranked the heat up in my bed, which helped until I got out of bed. Nothing was helping! She called my Dr. who gave her this stuff that made me see "little pink mice"...I hate mice~they scare me! That medicine made me feel so weird!





After many days in my bed...I "jumped" on Momma's bed Saturday morning for the first time in a week. I actually JUMPED! I can wag my tail (unlike other felines, I wag my tail (like a dog) when I'm happy)...I feel SO much better.

However...there is just one problem~~

Momma's taken away my pillow & blanket! Hmmmm, but she leaves her fuzzy robe on the end of the bed...


What's a 93 year old Kitty to do?
