My Favorite Things....

Okay, go ahead and hit me....
So I wasn't a big fan of "Sound of Music" until I became an adult (Hubby adores this movie)...keep in mind I grew up a tomboy and didn't watch musicals...
BUT~I think I've redeemed myself over the years, I HAVE watched some musicals and "chick flicks" and actually enjoyed them!

While thinking about writing this post, the title of this song came to mind. Go ahead and hum to yourself...sing if you'd wish, I'd like to tell you about a few of~~
"My Favorite Things"!

This all began with my daily walk...
I love the city I live in, there is such a sense of community here. I am a native, born and raised right here 40+ years.
Along the skyline of Main Street you'll notice the Church steeples. At the stroke of the noon and 5 o'clock each day the chimes begin...but at this time of year for about 10 minutes you hear Christmas hymns in those wonderful bells~~O Little Town Of Bethlehem~~O Holy Night~~Silent Night.

I love Christmas music.

I love this time of year...I love giving gifts, baking goodies, decorating and driving around looking at all the lights.

I love my Christmas tree, each year I've collected an ornament or two and dated them plus the ones the kids made in school. After 26 years I have so many I can't use them all at the same time, I don't think the wire branches would hold up, so I rotate each year...but I don't miss the opportunity while decorating to hold each one and remember what time in my life it represents.

I love getting together with friends that you may not get to see very much during the year.

I love sending and receiving Christmas cards. Believe it or not, I've saved ALL of the ones I've received...yes, I'm a pack rat!

I love the spirit the Holiday Season invokes...smiling and wishing complete strangers a Merry Christmas!

I LOVE my family!!

Now, the thing I don't love about Christmas is how much I miss my Granny. So much so that I was in the store on Monday, this lady turned around and I thought it was her! This is our 2nd Christmas without her and it doesn't get any easier. She loved the Holidays (Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter) and always had a huge gathering at her house. My Mom does a lot to continue the traditions but there's an empty spot at the table.
Granny's now an Angel in Heaven...she earned her wings long, long ago...singing all her favorite Christmas hymns!

I know these thoughts don't "match" the words of the lyrics...it's the hidden meanings.

These lyrics mean so much more to me now. And I'm sure if you think about each line you'll find a favorite thing too...

Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens
Bright copper kettles and warm woolen mittens
Brown paper packages tied up with strings
These are a few of my favorite things

Cream colored ponies and crisp apple streudels
Doorbells and sleigh bells and schnitzel with noodles
Wild geese that fly with the moon on their wings
These are a few of my favorite things

Girls in white dresses with blue satin sashes
Snowflakes that stay on my nose and eyelashes
Silver white winters that melt into springs
These are a few of my favorite things

When the dog bites
When the bee stings
When I'm feeling sad
I simply remember my favorite things
And then I don't feel so bad

Rodgers & Hammerstein

What are your favorite things?

Keep on Knittin' & Spinnin'!!

I can't believe I'm about to tell you (or anyone for that matter) this... but I JUST took down my Christmas cards from last year. I tape them on the back of my door as they come in and I loved looking at them so much, I couldn't take them down. I went to take them down a couple times and decided I enjoyed them, they weren't "hurting" anything and they stayed. When I got the first card this year, last years cards finally came down.

So, um, count me in as "Christmas cards" as one of my favorite things!

I love Christmas music, too. And Christmas lights--multicolored, not white. Around here, there is the unspoken attitude that multicolored lights are for the children. Once you are an adult, you should like white lights. If that is the case, I guess I'll be a child forever!

I have eons of Christmas cards saved!!! And, I adore Christmas music! Plus, I watch Christmas movies - Holiday Inn and White Christmas are just a couple of my favorites!!!

I love the Sound of Music. I was a rotten, pure tomboy, but I loved musicals from day one.

I have a separate scrapbook just for the "best" of each year's holiday cards.

It's great to read how happy, content and filled with Christmas spirit you are. Perfect post, glad I read it.

I love seeing the true spirit of Christmas being kept alive by wonderful people like you! I was in retail for a few years and I got quite jaded from the business. It's taken awhile, but I think I've finally recovered. Mostly thanks to people like you, who keep reminding the rest of us what its really all about.

Excellent post Robin! I'm a SoM lover and have been since I was a child (picture frog-voiced Dana singing "The hills are alive..." to her suffering parents and friends). It's true - - I promise.

Me? I love winter! Secondly, I love the Fall. Spring & Summer are just blemishes on the year as far as I'm concerned. ;) I love spending time with family, curling up on the sofa with hot tea and good book, or knitting. I like waking up to a white world after a nighttime snowfall. I'd better quit now or I'll go on and on.... Have a great one sweetie!

One of my favorites, although I was a tomboy, I grew up watching the sound of music.
It's lovely that people take the time to dwell on the positive things that life has to offer.
Family, is definitely what I appreciate the most!
I'm Heidi btw, just stoppin' by to coment :)

O.K., I'm a little sappy, but now I have tears in my eyes... I miss my Grandma terribly, too, as she was one of my best friends. There's a lady in church whose profile looks just like my Grandma's. It's kinda freaky. Anyway, A Few of My Favorite Things and thinking of her just brought me to tears!
